GeneInAlabama Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Does anyone know where we can find a list of states that require out-of-state preparers to register with their state? I do very few out-of-state returns but don't want to step out of bounds. Surely there must be a list somewhere. Quote
Lion EA Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Maybe your professional organization? Or, your software company would know the requirements to e-file each state's returns. Quote
GeorgeM Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 If you do only a few returns out-of-state I wouldn't even worry about if they want you to register with them. All the ones that I've done have never bothered me I don't about 10 of them they only bother you if you do 10 or more returns with them. states that I have done are as follows: New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia, California, Hawaii, South Carolina, New Hampshire Connecticut and Maine. TAXMAN Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 I too have done this. Never filed more than 10 in any other state in which I am not licensed. Some states use Fed guidelines. If ok by Fed than ok by state. Quote
MAMalody Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 I understood that NY required preparers to register regardless of the number of returns filed. Per GeorgeM I guess I was told wrong. Quote
Lion EA Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 NY requires registration under most conditions, but not for EAs, CPAs, and attorneys (I think). They amended the law after the first year of registration at the legal battle waged by the NYSEA. Quote
