Pacun Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 I renewed my PTIN today and now the P in front of my number changed its meaning from "Provisional" to "Permanent" since I am now an EA. Actually, they changed my whole number. My number used to be P007777777 and now is P119999999. I guess the P00 means provisional and the P11 means permanent. Quote

mlinder42 Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 They changed my PTIN last year when I registered.I called them and was told because I was an EA it changed and that it was permanent. I did it by paper because it would not work electronically. No problem renewing this year. Quote
Lion EA Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 My PTIN has four leading zeros. I thought that was because I got it the first year they were offered. At some point I became an EA. My PTIN did not change then nor did it change with the new requirements/fee. I still have the same old PTIN for 2012 as I always had. Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 My PTIN is from the first year also and has 2 leading zeroes. I am and was then a CPA and the number did not change last or this year. It may just be speculation as to the meaning, or lack thereof, relative to the numbering scheme. Maybe IRS doesn't even know! Crank Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 I'm a CPA and my PTIN renewal number stayed the same as is was last year, which was my first year PTIN. Starts with P01. Quote
joanmcq Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Provisional PTINs didn't exist until the new requirements came out. So any of us who were CPAs, attorneys, or EAs before this would just have a PTIN. If you aren't your PTIN is provisional until you pass the test(s). Quote
mcb39 Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Mine is (now) provisional, but it is still the same number that I have had since the beginning of PTINs. Quote
