terry Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Taxpayers not married. He earned 50000. She earned 25000. Had a child together in 2007. He owns home & all lived happily ever after all year. He could file Single. She could file Single, claim child exemption, child tax credit & EIC. She would have to provide over half of upkeep on home for HOH correct? I understand that the child can only be the qualifying child of one of them & that one takes all the benefits. Double checking myself here. Glad they are getting married this year! Thanks to all who respond. Oh, efile is going smoothly on my end so far, making me a happy camper!! Quote
RoyDaleOne Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 KEEPING UP A HOME To qualify for head of household status, you must pay more than half of the cost of keeping up a home for the year. You can determine whether you paid more than half of the cost of keeping up a home by using the worksheet shown on the next page. Quote
Pacun Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 She can claim single with a dependent and he can claim Head of Household with no dependent. Who said that getting married in this case is a good tax advice? Quote
RoyDaleOne Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Why can he not claim the dependent and head of household? And she single no dependent. More refund if she claims.... I see.... Quote
