Taxizen Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 I wonder if the Illinois licensed public accountant (CPA) is subject to IRS competency test. Please answer if you have any knowledge. Thanks. Quote
Lion EA Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 A CPA is a state designation subject to state regulations. The IRS accepts CPAs in good standing with their state, as well as lawyers, as eligible to practice before the IRS with no federal testing. Find complete details in Circular 230. Quote
Taxizen Posted November 30, 2011 Author Report Posted November 30, 2011 I wonder why I am subject to the test when I renewed PTIN over the internet. Did I mark wrong on the renewal questons? Thanks. Quote
Lion EA Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Don't know what it asks for CPAs, but I'm an EA and it asked for my number and expiration date. People have said if you leave out the expiration date, it stalls the registration. Call the Help number and make sure they know you're a CPA. Quote
Crank Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Yes, I completely missed the CPA expiration date and it notifies you of it on the last screen when it does an audit. Just had to back arrow to the appropriate page, enter it and forward to the submit screen to fix it. Quote
