grandmabee Posted April 17, 2011 Report Posted April 17, 2011 I am trying to finish off an extension for NY. CA resident working a job at the Columbia Univeristy. filing as nonresident. Is there a credit for tax paid to CA on the same wages? and Now I am looking to see if there will be city tax. this is a first for me. Just want to get the extenion done now. Looks like I have to mail the form in as they don't automatic accept the federal extension. thanks for any help Quote
Lion EA Posted April 17, 2011 Report Posted April 17, 2011 Not in NY but CT with several NRs. I efiled my NY extensions. If not a resident of NY City, then no City tax, just state. Don't know about CA, but for CT residents they take the credit for taxes paid to another jurisdiction on their CT returns. If a NY resident, they can take a credit for taxes paid to another jurisdiction on their NY return, a form ending in R, but that doesn't sound like your situation. Probably some NYers will respond Sunday. Quote

You get taxed where you earn the money which in this case is NY. and CA should give a credit for those taxes paid. if he was paid by Columbia but worked physically in CA then you have a whole other story. I assume that means for extension as well. Quote
Lion EA Posted April 17, 2011 Report Posted April 17, 2011 If you're an EA, CPA, etc., you don't have to register. Here's the link so you can read the qualifications and register if you have to: http://www.tax.ny.gov/tp/ Quote
