Tax Prep by Deb Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 I'm getting ready to buy a new computer and am looking at one from Costsco. It comes with Windows 7 Premium Home Version. I will only be using the computer for tax work and Quickbooks. Will the home version be O.K. or should I try to get one with Pro? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Deb! 1 Quote
ILLMAS Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Home edition comes with software you will probably never use, pro is perfect for a business use, but home edition works too with your tax and accounting software. It there a price difference or you can choose which one? Quote
Pacun Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Go with Pro. Pro is for Pros. Home is for home users. Quote
jainen Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 >using the computer for tax work and Quickbooks<< There are two differences. Pro offers heavy duty network capability and Pro offers a "virtual" XP mode for older software. Obviously you upgrade your tax program every year, and you might as well get the newest Quickbooks for your new computer too. Cost matters more for big corporations that don't want to buy lots of new licenses, but you just need the one. Home will be fine for you. It has the same graphics capabilities so you can watch all your movies. Well, maybe a machine with Pro will also have a better graphics card and more RAM and so on, but that's comparing more than just the operating system. Quote

FWIW.....my newest laptop is Win 7 Home 64 bit and ATX 2008, 2009 and 2010 are all working fine with it. Quote

It there a price difference or you can choose which one? The one I'm looking at is pre-configured. I could probably order the same unit thru Dell and have Pro installed, but when I tried to compare the two units, the one from Costco had a larger hard drive and more ram than the one offered thru dell. I would prefer to order thru Costco because of their return policy. I hope I don't need to return it, but if I do all I have to do is take it to my local Costco. Not sure what the procedure would be thru Dell. Deb! Quote
mcb39 Posted March 18, 2011 Report Posted March 18, 2011 I would recommend to buy local unless you know an extremely good fixer-upper. I just had to have my "best" laptop completely restored. Luckily I had staggered backups and He was able to find one without any viruses. In retrospect, I knew exactly when "it" happened. My guru takes all the junk off as soon as I get one and sets it up the way I (and he) want. Good luck with whatever you buy. I don't think there are any of them that aren't good these days as they all seem to get their innards from the same places. Quote
chadlonetree Posted March 18, 2011 Report Posted March 18, 2011 I always buy my computers from Costco. Just got a new one a couple weeks ago (the dual 25' monitors is nice too). Windows Home 64bit has worked fine for me. The only issue is problems printing in ATX years 2006 and older. If you really need to print these old returns, a little bit of time on the phone with support will let you accomplish it, but those years were not designed to function on 64bit operating systems. All 2007 and newer run great, as well as Quickbooks (I have 08, 09, 10). Quote
