grandmabee Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 can I choose to use the tuition credit or the 2106 deduction. client at request of employer takes class at college to become an emt. now a police offier. employer was going to pay for all the class and books but because of budget decided they couldn't. client paid all. tuition 1100 books 300. using the lifetime only get 119 for credit on tuition only because of income limit. but if I take on 2106 with tuition and books get about 200 Do I have that choice. not a new career just an enhancement of current job. at employers request. your opinions please Quote
Kea Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 If he meets the requirements for unreimbursed employee expense & has enough other expenses to meet the 2% hurdle then, yes you can use either. However, I would question that the education doesn't qualify him for a new job as an EMT. I would think that would be different from being a police officer. Quote
