AnnieR Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 I prepared a return for a long-time client today...e-filing for the first time. Both collect SS, husband is one of my GM retirees. The return kept being rejected because of the spouse's SS# and name not matching. SIXTY YEARS ago the wife didn't change her last name when they got married and it was never caught until today! Gail in Virginia Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 If they both collect SS, why didn't they find out when they signed up for benefits that her name was wrong? I thought that the name on the benefit statement was the same as the name on the social security card. Isn't it? Quote

Pacun Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 I HAVE a client 89 years old who for the last 3 years has had to file under her maiden name since she never officially changed it 65 years ago. she gets soc sec medicare etc all under her married name. That's because they go to the SS Adminitration counter and they filed their taxes on paper. 65 years ago, today's computers were not born and there was not need to be accurate. Everything is changing now and we have to efile everything and we have to adjust. Quote
