rich Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Minor dependent has social security income of $3765 and no taxes withheld. Can his father claim her income on his 1040 or she has to file her own return? so far I read is for minor/dependent over $950 in unearned income she has to file her tax return. Please guide me in right direction. Thanks Quote

Cathy Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 father does not claim income on his return and the dtr does not need to file tax return for SS I agree with bcolleen assuming that daughter had no other income and father provided more than 50% of support, yada, yada, yada.... Pacun Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 ...and father provided more than 50% of support,... Cathy I would change it to... provided the child didn't provide more than 50% of her own support. In any event, this will not change the fact she is exempted from filing... but it will change her qualifying person status for her relatives. To reiterate, she doesn't have to file. Quote
