taxguy057 Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 Received an rejection code 1040FD510 which states that the SSN of the taxpayer and or spouse was used as an depenedent on another return. My client has been with me for 5yrs now 39yrs old and has 3 dependents. Never had this reject before. Does it mean she has filed her tax return already? I asked and she says she doesnt know whats going on. Any ideas on what may be causing the reject to occur? THX!! TG Quote
Tax Prep by Deb Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 Could be someone else used her social or his social. It does happen. Deb! Quote
David1980 Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 510 can also occur when a dependent files a return as the primary or secondary. Probably more likely that one of the dependents filed a tax return and claimed their own exemption. Do you know which field the reject is on? Quote

kcjenkins Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 The error message should have an 'occurrence' number, which indicates which one has the problem. Even if the t/p's ssn is where you were sent, if the occurrence number is 3 then it's the first child, as 1 and 2 would be the t/p and the spouse. Quote
Cathy Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 If you hit a dead end, the toll free number to the IRS's Identify Theft Department is 1-800-908-4490. Had my first Identify Theft issue last week. First one ever. Here's a link to the ERC reject codes: http://www.irs.gov/taxpros/providers/article/0,,id=175068,00.html Cathy Quote
