cache Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 There is a person filing single who has a valid ss number but is a victim of identity theft therefore the irs issued an itin number to file their fed tax return. The problem is that when the itin is used the person does not receive the making work pay credit. How can his taxes be filed to get the credit he is entitled to? Quote

I read that when there is identy theft, the IRS will provide a pin to the victim. The victim will file taxes using that pin on the return and the IRS will process that return without taking into consideration other returns or W-2s. My guess is that you will overwrite the "making work pay credit" line. Quote
cache Posted February 12, 2011 Author Report Posted February 12, 2011 Thank you. So then I use the number issued by the IRS and wait to see if the IRS will review the return and give the credit? Quote

Do I have the client contact the IRS directly and provide documentation of the identify theft, or do I submit a W-7? Thanks Quote
