TAXMAN Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I noticed on Virginia Returns that they are getting a different DCN from the Federal Return. I thought these had to be the same. Question Virginia about this no response. Anyone with a different take on this? Quote
neilbrink Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I believe that when the federal and state were piggy-backed, they had the same number. Now that they are not piggy-backed, they have different numbers. Quote
chuck Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I believe that when the federal and state were piggy-backed, they had the same number. Now that they are not piggy-backed, they have different numbers. And I've noticed that if there is an error when efile is attempted DCN # generated the next time counts upward. Quote
TAXMAN Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 I have not tried this yet. I used to use DCN to track return counts. If this is happening I wonder if IRS will be looking for all the missing numbers in between? Quote
kcjenkins Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 No, the IRS does not care about the sequence, nor do they relate them to number of returns filed. They just have to be unique to the taxpayer. Some people, for example, have Preparer #1 use the DCN starting with zero, then Preparer #2 starts with 500, and Preparer #3 starts with 1000. That makes it easy to see at a glance which preparer did which returns. Others use the same method to keep up with which COMPUTER they prepared the return on, like if they work at home as well as in the office. That way they make sure they do not accidentally use the same number for two different clients. Quote
