Art Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 Soory, to post this, but I can not remember. I need to file 1099-MISC Copy A and 1096 paper copies. Do both of these still need to be printed on "red" copy or can we now send in the copies printed off of our software? Thanks, Art Quote

kcjenkins Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 Red forms are needed for all the information returns that go to the IRS, like the 1099s. Not needed for those that go to SSA, like W-2s. I will add, tho, that if you are sending only a small number [ my rule of thumb is 5 or less], you can send them on plain paper, and they will process them anyway. Probably because it is easier to just type them into the system than it is to send them back. More than a few, it's easier on them to send them back, since their antique equipment can not read them unless they are on the red forms, and they have to put them into the system by hand. Quote
ILLMAS Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 To avoid using red forms, just efile them. I have been efiling my clients 1099 and W-2's, except today, I guess the SSA does not accept if an employee uses an ITIN as a SS# for work MAS Quote

Slippery Pencil Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 I have just one to send for this client. If efiling doesn't work for some reason, or you prefer mail, just use black on white. I've been using black toner on white paper for a handful of years and have never heard from them on it. Quote
