Jack from Ohio Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Client in WA (our office is in OH) being audited for late filed 2005 (filed Sep 2006). She received the notice April 29. 2009. Client has talked to the auditor and set up a date of June 9, 2009. She only called today to get a copy of her 2004 return. The person that prepared the return is an EA. Question: What luck have you had getting the IRS to relocate the audit closer to your office in this kind of situation? Are there any special requirements etc? This is the first office audit we have had at this great distance, and would prefer not to fly all the way to WA to represent her. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!! Quote
TAXBILLY Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Never had a problem moving an audit the last 35 years. taxbilly Quote
kcjenkins Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Well, it's generally possible to move it when all the client's records are with you, not with the client. But the closer to the date of the audit meeting it is, the less they are willing to change it, since they generally assume that this is primarily a delaying tactic. And whether it is or not, it screws up their scheduling, and they do not like that. Of course, you mist have a 2848 on file for the taxpayer, as well. So get the 2848 filed right away, get all the records into your possession, and THEN call and ask for the change. Good luck. Quote
joelgilb Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 I have been successful in moving audits everytime I requested it. Key is that it is for the benefit of the taxpayer and that includes if their representation is in a different location. Quote
joelgilb Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Another thing to note, that moving an audit is a good tactic to close out old years, especially if you expect adjustments. Quote
