I understand you can e-file the form 4868 Extension request by itself. (true?)

Then I am also 'assuming' you can efile the actual returns at a later date too. I just wanted some confirmation on that before I get in trouble yet.

Thanks for this and all other assistance this year!!!

Yes, and Yes. You efile the extension by adding the 4868 to the return, then clicking on it and going to the efile tab and filling it out. Then you click on 'create' and the middle choice will be the extension. Check only that one, and it will create it for efile. You transmit them just like any other efile.

Later you come back and finish the return and efile it. One other thing. When you efile the extension, and later go back to complete the return, it will pop up a message that says you can't change the return because it has been efiled. Ignore that, it's only the extension that you can not change. Just check the box for 'change anyway', and don't worry about it. The first time I saw that it spooked me, before I figured it out.

Thanks for the quick responses!!

KC... you are wonderful. You are so right, I would have spooked when that message pops up.

Lord Willing... I am gonna survive another tax season. (frazzled... but survived) :D

Ray in Ohio, that's why KC gets the big bucks here on this board. She always explains the whole enchilada and does not assume background like I do. I wanna be like KC when I grow up!

You will survive with the likes of this wonderful group. You made it this far and I suspect we, at least most of us, will be popping in and out over the next several months and regroup next season. Now rest easy, you deserve it!
