jrollo Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 Taxpayer is past years has been able to deduct mother as a dependent. Mother lives in own home, and her only income is Social Security. She had some savings and decided to remodel the outside of her home with new siding and windows. The mother withdrew from her savings to pay for the siding and the daughter paid for the new windows. My question is this, can we add the amount paid for the windows as support for her mother? The old windows were in very bad conditon. However, I do not believe this would count as a maintenance cost, but a capital improvement to the house. Would appreicate your input. Thank you, Jeff Quote
Terry D EA Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 No, I think you need to read the rules regarding dependency and the support test. Terry D. Quote
RoyDaleOne Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 The replacement of old windows in very bad condition sounds more like maintenance or a repair to me. The new windows mostly did not extend the useful life of the structure of the house. Repairing a leaking roof is maintenance, so, maybe could be the fixing of old windows. Quote
