AnnieR Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 On CNN (actually HLN) this morning, a financial advisor stated and put up a chart that ANYONE who gets an SS retirement check, veterans retirement, etc., practically any kind of a government retirement check, will automatically receive a $250 stimulus check. The treasury is supposed to be geared up to do this as quickly as possible. Since I haven't seen anything on this board about it or anywhere else, I wondered if any of you had. Guess too many others haven't heard because my phone isn't ringing like crazy wanting to know if they had to file to get a stimulus check. AnnieR Quote

AnnieR In looking at the Social Security website, you are right...http://www.ssa.gov/payment/. Looks like all SS recipients will receive the $250. Quote
mcb39 Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 CCH Tax Briefing: The new law provides onetime payments of $250 to individuals on fixed income (primarily SS recipients, RR and disabled veterans). Retired government workers, who generally are ineligible for SS, also will recieve one-time payments of $250. There is also a "Making Work Pay" credit., which allows a credit against income tax in an amount equal to the lesser of 6.2% of the individual's earned income or $400 ($800 for MFJ) The credit will apply retroactively to the start of 2009 and extend through 2010. kcjenkins Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 At least, it seems this one is going to be done from the SSA directly, rather than through the IRS, which means, according to the SSA site that we do not have to do anything on this one, nor does the taxpayer. It's going to come as an extra payment for SSA. http://www.ssa.gov/payment/ Quote
TAXBILLY Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 There are two other groups eligible that cannot be handled by the SSA: 1) Taxpayers who receive VA disability payments 2) Government workers who are not in the Social Security system. I wonder how they are going to handle them? taxbilly Quote
kcjenkins Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 The VA will send probably those payments, just like SSA does. And the other gov workers would presumably get them directly from the same agency that pays them their retirement. Quote
TAXBILLY Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Lotta presumption there! :~) taxbilly Quote
