Chowdahead Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I have a client who filed in 2007 on a 1040EZ with zero exemptions. In March 2008 she had a child. I checked the Recovery Rebate Calculator on the IRS website and it says she was eligible for $0. When I enter $0 in on the Line 70 worksheet, the result is a $0 rebate for 2008. Who come? She had a kid and is now filing Head of Household. She made about $2900 in 2008. I thought taxpayers who have children or change filing status in 2008 are eligible? I absolutely hate this worksheet. What does Filing Status "1" mean anyway? Single? I can understand number of exemptions, but it asks for the filing status to be entered in as a number. Quote
jasdlm Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 If she had 0 exemptions in 2007, I assume she was claimed by someone else? That would negate any credit for her. I would think, however, that she would be eligible for $300 for the baby. Do you have the 'calculate the credit' box checked at the top of the page? (I made that mistake a couple times.) Quote
Don in Upstate NY Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I would think, however, that she would be eligible for $300 for the baby. Do you have the 'calculate the credit' box checked at the top of the page? (I made that mistake a couple times.) I don't think that you get the additional $300 per child unless you also qualify for the basic credit itself. If she earned only $2,900 in 2008 she's $100 short of the magic $3,000 lower limit on earned income or social security. Quote
jasdlm Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Excellent point on the income side, Don. I missed that totally. Quote

It shouldn't negate the credit for her since the credit is based on 2008 return. Clients claimed by someone else last year and were over 17 did not trigger a credit for anyone. If they claim themselves this year because they no longer qualify as someone elses dependent, they get the credit this year. I just finished one of these. Client was a student last year. This year he made $22598, claimed himself and got a $600 credit. Quote
Chowdahead Posted February 11, 2009 Author Report Posted February 11, 2009 Thanks, I didn't even think about the income level being too low. Wow... she literally had income of $2963. So she missed it by $37... Quote
michaelmars Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 add $37 to income as lottery winnings <S> Quote
JohnH Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Did she do any baby sitting in 2008? :) Quote
