HV Ken Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 It seems there is a new requirement this year to enter an explanation when e-filing with an 8829. Can someone enlighten me? What kind of an explanation are they looking for? Thanks! Quote
BulldogTom Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I had that pop up also. I wrote in "This is an explanation" and it went through. Not sure if that is going to bite me in the butt or not. I guess we will see. Tom Lodi, CA Quote

Tom Lodi, CA I thought they wanted explanation of improvement made this year. so I just wrote no improvement in 2008. also went thru Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 It only takes a single character to make it go through. I do not know if this is ATX or the IRS. We put the words "Home Office" in. A single "." works too. So far, no rejects. Quote

Hard for me to imagine ATX just did this to annoy us! Quote
kcjenkins Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Actually, folks, the 'explanation' is related to the line 36 and line 41 entries. So the explanation would normally be, for line 36, either "FMV' or 'Adj Basis' And line 41 would only need an explanation if additions and/or improvements were placed in service after you started using the home office. In that case, they want you to explain the computation you got by following the rules in the chart on page 4 of the instructions. Quote
BulldogTom Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 But when you have no line 41 or 36 entries, you still get the error message on efile. That is the baffling part. Tom Lodi, CA Quote
