Steven P Salley Posted Saturday at 01:36 PM Report Posted Saturday at 01:36 PM Has anyone E-filed a 1040 Return using ATX or does it need to be paper filed? Quote
BrewOne Posted Saturday at 06:28 PM Report Posted Saturday at 06:28 PM IR-2022-130, June 23, 2022 [announcement of e-filing of amended returns] ...Additionally, a new, electronic checkbox has been added for Forms 1040/1040-SR, 1040-NR and 1040-SS/1040-PR to indicate that a superseding return is being filed electronically. A superseded return is one that is filed after the originally filed return but submitted before the due date, including extensions... I don't think this ever came about (or it's not in ATX)--I believe an amended return filed before the deadline acts the same.* *just did a bit of digging--technically it's not the same thing but in most cases it won't make a difference. BulldogTom Posted Saturday at 06:50 PM Report Posted Saturday at 06:50 PM So, do you file the 1040X before the refund is paid on the original return? I have always waited for the refund before amending, but I am wondering if that is the correct course of action? I just don't want to gum up the works at IRS. Tom Longview, TX Quote
Lee B Posted Saturday at 07:01 PM Report Posted Saturday at 07:01 PM Superseded returns are processed electronically while amended returns are processed manually. Given the big backlog in processing amended returns the delay could make a meaningful difference. 29 minutes ago, BrewOne said: ...Additionally, a new, electronic checkbox has been added for Forms 1040/1040-SR, 1040-NR and 1040-SS/1040-PR to indicate that a superseding return is being filed electronically. You already have the answer for the federal superseded through ATX, but this topic came up earlier this season, and at that time when I checked, there were only three states (CA, UT, NY) that accept superseded individual returns. That means that if your client's state return(s) also requires correction and isn't one of those three states I listed, then you will have to create a separate file for the state amendment. It may be easier to process by amending both the federal and state at the same time. 1 Quote

Tom Longview, TX Seeing as how the federal refund comes in less than two weeks, in most cases, I'll wait a week or so before amending. 1 Quote
BrewOne Posted Saturday at 09:31 PM Report Posted Saturday at 09:31 PM getting back to the original question: has anyone here electronically filed a 1040 in ATX marked "superseding"? and my follow-up--has anyone here e-filed a 1040 in any software marked "superseding"? Quote

mcb39 Posted Sunday at 01:23 AM Report Posted Sunday at 01:23 AM I have filed several amended returns this year due to the receiving of late statements. No problems with any. We just amended one yesterday because the client had given us a 2023 W2 instead of 2024 and received a pretty good sized refund. We didn't catch it until after the fact and neither did the IRS. I amended it yesterday and it has been accepted. Young man will have to pay back a large part of his refund. This was with ATX. Quote
