Tax Prep by Deb Posted February 4 Report Posted February 4 Just received notice from Quickbooks today that my payroll software is going up to 2800.00 in April. I do payroll regularly for two clients and occasionally for a couple of others. The price is way out of line. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Lee B Posted February 4 Report Posted February 4 It really depends on whether you're looking for Full Service Payroll or not Quote
Tax Prep by Deb Posted February 4 Author Report Posted February 4 Define Full Service. I prepare the payroll information, I prepare and file all the tax forms, I will be manually entering it in the write up software, so I don't know what else would be needed. Quote

Lee B Posted February 4 Report Posted February 4 I have used Medlin for 3 years now for 6 different clients with one license. It's desktop software not online. You and/or your clients are responsible for making all of the payroll tax deposits. Medlin prints Forms 94x so you can paper file these reports. Medlin is located in Napa CA so your CA payroll issues should be well taken care of. The software works well and I really have no complaints and the price is very reasonable. https://medlin.com/ 2 Quote

I have thought about this on and off throughout the years but always stuck with Quickbooks because it was easy and flowed nicely with their software, but this is totally getting out of hand. I don't charge enough to even cover the added cost so I am definitely jumping ship. I poked around on Medlin and liked what I saw, just wasn't ready until today! Quote

Full service payroll would be generating paychecks and advising +/or making the payroll deposits for the client, much like payroll services like Paychex or ADP provides. It sounds like you are doing after-the-fact write-up work and the quarterly and annual tax filing. 2 Quote

mcbreck Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 How many employees are you talking about? Manually entering a bunch into Medlin could be rather time consuming compared to Quickbooks. You can do multiple companies with Medlin but only one computer. I used to do one company on one laptop and another on a different laptop and they did an upgrade and demanded I buy a second license. It's not a big deal but it was just how I liked it previously. My sister-in-law did payroll for a school district, what a nightmare job. She had a lot of interesting stories though. Quote
Lee B Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 My largest client on Medlin has 13 employees and it's my most complicated payroll. Entering payroll in Medlin is fairly quick for me. I do have another client with 60 employees but I use a different online program for that payroll. 2 Quote
Tax Prep by Deb Posted February 5 Author Report Posted February 5 One client averages 13-15 per payroll run twice per month, the other clients are small 1-5 at most. At this point I am willing to spend the extra time not to give Quickbooks that 2800.00 for something I use to pay only a few hundred dollars for. Last year they doubled from the year before, this year they more than doubled, and I get it, they are competing with me for the same clients. In time I realize the desktop will not be available and only their on-line version. Again why not? My one desktop can handle multiple clients, on-line each has to have a separate subscription. It just really sucks! 1 Quote
DANRVAN Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 I have used the payroll module of EasyACCT EasyACCT Business Write-Up System desktop for years with no complaints. The last last price after discount was $982, but also includes depreciation, loan amortization, along with write-ups and general ledger which I personally uses for my business's. There is no extra charges for multiple clients, just the yearly flat fee and unlimited support which I rarely use. It also allows direct deposit to employees. Quote
Catherine Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 You can download Medlin and try it out fully as regards what your workload would be - all you can't do is print, without paying them. For the tiny price, you could even spring for it and give a shot. I've used it for years and it's fabulous. 2 Quote
