BulldogTom Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Client son filed 2024 return through HRB software. Found out it was wrong and filed an amended return through HRB software. Got another tax doc they forgot about and now need to correct again. If they filed an amended return, can I file regular 1040 and will it be considered a superseding return or do I need to amend the amended. This is a new one on me. Thanks Tom Longview, TX Quote

Thanks Tom Longview, TX I think that I would amend the original 1040, while picking up the adjustments on the first amendment. 1 Quote
TexTaxToo Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Superseding returns must be filed before the due date (including extensions). https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-taxpayers-now-have-more-options-to-correct-amend-returns-electronically If the original return and amendment were efiled, I believe you can efile up to 3 amendments total. 2 Quote
jklcpa Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 I would amend this. For everyone reading this, also keep in mind that plenty of states don't recognize superceded returns so that a consideration. This doesn't answer the question for Tom,but it is a good discussion of the differences and has a chart comparing the 2 methods: https://blog-mbgcpa-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/blog.mbgcpa.com/amended-vs-superseded-tax-returns?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&hs_amp=true&usqp=mq331AQIUAKwASCAAgM%3D#amp_tf=From %1%24s&aoh=17385457517143&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.mbgcpa.com%2Famended-vs-superseded-tax-returns 4 Quote
BulldogTom Posted February 3 Author Report Posted February 3 I was leaning to amending. Thanks for the confirmation. I will wait until the amended return is processed and then amend. Tom Longview, TX 3 Quote
Lion EA Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 If you wait for an amendment to be processed, it can be a long wait. If your client needs to make any elections that have to be made on an original, timely-filed return, you'll want to do a superseding return. Otherwise, an amended return is fine.
