ATX requires an authenticator App on my phone and I don't have one

That may be true when using the app to access websites, but I wonder if there is an additional security layer of device centric pairing built into the ATX software or some sort of syncing that would be necessary.  mcb39's experience seems to indicate that the former is the case. I don't have multiple computers any more to test on.

The device is paired with the desktop.  We tried it using her access to the computer that she uses and it didn't work.  You have to open the Tax Program and prepare it from within the Program under Tools.  I found it in the Knowledgebase Article Number: 000229080  "How do I creaate or add a new user when using ATX"

Ok, I finally called support.  Wasn't too long on hold.  The rep walked me through how to access the QR code again.  That's what I needed.  I only need one authenticator app on my phone but I needed two QR scans.  Now I have two separate codes for the two different programs.  So I can get into both programs now.  Hopefully once I do this a few times, it will be easy.  Ha.  Thanks for all the help.

Can you share what you learned and what needs to be done so others can learn from what you did, and it will be documented here?

Yes.  When you log into the ATX tax program or the ATX Payroll program, you input your user name (Admin) but do not enter your password.  Below that is a link that says Authentication Manager or Manage your Authentication.  When you hit that link, you will be prompted to re-enter your registration number.  When you do that, the QR code appears.  This is what I needed, the second QR code for the Payroll program.  You can then scan it with your phone and my MS Authentication app (only one app) then displays the security code for both the regular tax program and for the Payroll program.  I didn't notice the link for managing the authentication and entered my password, then the security code window appeared which I didn't have.  I only had one security code on my phone for the regular tax program.  I hope this helps  for anyone having a similar problem.

Well that's going to suck for people in larger offices that might use different computers.

I totally get that.  In my office, I am the only one who does the e-filing.  That is why it is necessary for someone else to be able to access my computer and the ATX program.  Last year I was in the hospital for seven days and had my phone with me.  Since the phone is tied to the computer, nobody else would be able to have access.  My assistant does prepare returns, but she saves her files to a jump drive.  I then import the info into my computer; go over everything and file the return.  This is probably not your normal situation; which is why I had to figure out a way for her to be able to access my program, should something happen to me.

I have tried and tried to get ATX on my laptop. It is fine on my main computer. Authentication works. When I downloaded it to my laptop, and I attempt to pair it, it lists my main computer. I tried it with another phone. I tried it with different login names that I have listed. I tried with the different user code. I tried with a Yubikey. Every time it saves as the main computer, so the codes are useless. I cannot get into the program on the laptop to add a different user. We have a lot of power outages here and I want to be able to work...I am so frustrated. Not willing to fight ATX support yet...

I had good results working with ATX on connecting to "Authenticator.cc browser extension in Chrome".  They have a prompt dedicated for that purpose, the wait time was not long and spent working with  a headset on.

Are you installing it as stand alone on both your main computer and your laptop? Just spitballing here.

Your best bet might be a different authenticator, but having two separate standalone installs might be the problem, but I would think having two different computer names would work.

I will try to install it on my laptop, maybe tomorrow.  I  intended to anyway.  I will use the same phone because I have to.  Will let you know what happens.  This is strange., because my assistant was able to pair her phone to her computer and then to mine so has two different authenticators on her phone.  Both computers are stand alone.  It shouldn't matter if you have a desktop or a laptop, should it.  Once again, I say that the phone is paired to the computer and not the program.

I have tried goggle authenticator, microsoft authenticator,  wK authenticator, yubikey authenticator. I have them both set up as stand alone and that might be my problem. I tried one phone for my main computer and my husbands phone for the desktop...I have two internet providers (one is a backup) and I tried having one computer on the main isp and the laptop on the other one...I'll try fresh installs on both computers

I have followed the instructions, i get the authenticator code, enter it with and without the space, it fails every time. I have repaired the authenticator. Tried both Windows and Google, still fails!

Could be the time on your computer and phone are off by more than 30 seconds. You can tell windows to display seconds, then compare that to your phone. Or you could switch to a desktop authenticator, which is the path I chose.

Are you trying to pair the device to your computer by entering the initial code for that, or have you completed the pairing and are trying to open the program?

Yes, this could also be a problem. My phone and computer have a difference of 2 seconds and the auth code will fail if I open the authenticator before trying to open the program, but it works every time if I open the program to the point of needing to get the auth code and then open the authenticator. Then it works every time.

Why not use biometrics ?  Fingerprint readers are cheap and very easy to use.  IRS just requires two forms.  One could be a user name and password and the second a fingerprint.  Bypass these annoying authenticator apps.  Copied from IRS.

Multi-factor authentication, also known as two-factor authentication, allows a tax professional or taxpayer to use another feature such as a security code sent to a mobile device, a pin number or a fingerprint in addition to the username and password. A thief may steal usernames and passwords but cannot access accounts without the additional multifactor feature.

Or even a PIN with username and password.  Pins can be set up in Windows and I imagine Macs too.  Bypass the cell crap.
