Donald Hughes Posted September 19, 2024 Report Posted September 19, 2024 TP lives in their primary home year-round. They have a 2nd home located on an island that requires a ferry boat to transmit people and vehicles on and off the island. They have started a business, based on the island at their 2nd home address. My take on this is that the travel (a commute) from primary home to the 2nd home is not a deduction. Mileage on the island is a deduction. If tools, materials, etc. are needed and are only available on the mainland the ferry expense and mileage would be a deduction for that work related costs Please share your thoughts. Quote
Lion EA Posted September 19, 2024 Report Posted September 19, 2024 Business mileage on the island would be a biz deduction, not all mileage. Be careful about mileage that tries to turn personal mileage into business mileage. Does their mileage log support their biz miles? Ask lots of questions. 2 Quote

jklcpa Posted September 24, 2024 Report Posted September 24, 2024 Lion answered best that the mileage to and from the island home IS commuting. If the business is from this location, then the business mileage once on the island would be deductible. Documentation is key! Quote

Corduroy Frog Posted September 25, 2024 Report Posted September 25, 2024 I believe that the mileage procuring tools, supplies, etc from the mainland really IS deductible, but must be supported with a log. Without a log, it is still just plain ole commuting. Quote
