Marie Posted October 12, 2023 Report Posted October 12, 2023 Taypayer filed an extension to file her 2020 tax return, and it was filed in October of 2021. Now we need to amend. When is the deadline for this 2020 return. I know it's a dumb question, but...... sometimes we have to ask Quote
michaelmars Posted October 12, 2023 Report Posted October 12, 2023 you can always amend. the deadline for refunds is 3 years from filing due date. Quote
Marie Posted October 12, 2023 Author Report Posted October 12, 2023 so for a refund, does it need to be filed by 10162023? Quote
Lee B Posted October 12, 2023 Report Posted October 12, 2023 "When to File Generally, to claim a refund, you must file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Returns filed before the due date (without regard to extensions) are considered filed on the due date, and withholding is deemed to be tax paid on the due date. Special rules apply for refund claims relating to net operating losses, foreign tax credits, bad debts, and other issues. For more information, refer to the Instructions for Form 1040-X." 1 Quote
