Lee B Posted August 7, 2023 Report Posted August 7, 2023 I am looking at an IRS letter. The letter says the preferred way of responding is via upload to irs.gov/. . . . . . . When this start and has anyone used this and was it effective? Quote
BrewOne Posted August 7, 2023 Report Posted August 7, 2023 brand new--should work but haven't tried except uploading 2848's/8821's. It's what the IRS wants to move to. 1 Quote
Randall Posted August 8, 2023 Report Posted August 8, 2023 I have composed letters for the client. Do you upload the letter? Once uploaded, is there a way to track the letter/response. I have a client who mailed a response letter some time back and still hasn't heard from them. Quote
BrewOne Posted August 8, 2023 Report Posted August 8, 2023 I think it's currently a pilot program. So if they don't offer an electronic response, you are stuck with phone, mail, fax. Quote

schirallicpa Posted August 8, 2023 Report Posted August 8, 2023 Whatever happened to all those documents destroyed by the IRS? Was there any follow up on that? Quote

GLGACCT Posted August 8, 2023 Report Posted August 8, 2023 From the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/help/irs-document-upload-tool Under more info, it seems like it is only for a few forms. Also, there is a video link for instructions. 1 Quote
Lee B Posted August 9, 2023 Author Report Posted August 9, 2023 After I uploaded my response I received the following acknowledgement: "Your documents have been successfully uploaded. You may be contacted at a future date regarding your response. The current time is: Wed Aug 09 2023 13:21:48 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time)" 2 Quote

Lee B Posted August 9, 2023 Author Report Posted August 9, 2023 No, I didn't have to do either. I had to provide Business Name, EIN, IRS Letter number plus a few other details plus a copy of the IRS letter. The letter code had to be on the dropdown list! 4 Quote

Was the response considered from you (tax preparer) or the client (taxpayer)? In the past, when I compose a letter for the client, it is from and signed by the client. Quote
Lee B Posted August 10, 2023 Author Report Posted August 10, 2023 You need a signed response letter from your client. This is the online equivalent of faxing in a signed response letter plus attachments. At first, I asked myself, "Is this an improvement?" After thinking about it,"Yes it is because the uploaded file is cross referenced with a business name, an EIN and a letter number." Previously an IRS employee would have entered that information manually. Moving forward one step at a time 2 Quote
Lee B Posted August 16, 2023 Author Report Posted August 16, 2023 "The IRS is now providing this capability to an additional 51 notices and letters received from the IRS. These updated IRS notices and letters, which taxpayers will receive in the coming weeks, will include instructions that guide them to the appropriate upload tool." 1 Quote
