Marie Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 Was using a Kyocera 2540. now it's crunching paper, shading terrible and just causing too much trouble for this time of the years. It is a 42page output. off brand toner was reasonable. 3 years old Is it worth calling a repairman? probably not Any suggestions on good machines? Quote
Lion EA Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I've always used HP printers. They've been my workhorses for decades. But my current IT guy likes Brother, saying at the lower price points Brother is better than HP. So, I have a Brother laser, very fast, black & white printer for tax returns. I still have a very old HP color multi function machine for everything else; it was actually a freebie from a client who upgraded. See what prices you find on Amazon and what sales you find in your local Staples/office supply stores. By the way, my oldest HP, which still was going strong, had an off brand cyan toner explode inside it. It was from the mid-90s so didn't seem worth the time to clean it out or the expense to have it professionally cleaned/repaired. I've gone back to HP and Brother toners! 1 Quote
joanmcq Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I’m using a Brother and it has been a decent all in one. Quote
Marie Posted March 25, 2022 Author Report Posted March 25, 2022 THANKS. What are the numbers of the Hp and Brother so I can see what you are using. Quote
Lion EA Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 My hand-me-down all-in-one is HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier. I do love it. Look for whatever their newest version is. I've had Brother all-in-ones in the past, all of which died young; but my IT guy feels Brother has improved a lot over the years, especially in the more affordable price ranges. Quote
BulldogTom Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I use a Canon ImageClass 1620. Scanning is OK. Prints great. Copies great. I get the off brand toner on Amazon. Tom Longview, TX 2 Quote
schirallicpa Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I have 2 Brothers - one for printing tax returns one for the upfront computer - makes copies too. They are workhorses. Get your toner at SuppliesOutlet.com Quote
BTS Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 6 Brother Laser printers here. Use to use HP since the original HP LaserJet III (1990). Damn Im getting old !! But switched to Brother about 4 years ago. Anyway the Brothers are cheap to operate. We use generic toner cartridges and drums from LD Products. Never any issue. 8,000 page toner cartridge is only $19.99 Quote

GLJEANNE Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 Brother MFC-8890 DW here. Can't say there's never been issues, but only once have I needed a repair person, to replace.... some part that needs to be replaced every 5+ years. LOL. It does seem to be overheating lately - but who can blame it, during tax season? - but if it goes I'll replace it with the same model, or close to it. Quote
TAXMAN Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I get supplies at Supplies out. Order today by 12 and they be here tomorrow. I am still using my HP 4050 printers. Although had to put a Maintence unit in one in Dec. Quote
joanmcq Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I'm using a Brother MFC-L2700DW since before I moved which was over 5 years ago. Still working great. Get the toner & drum from InkJetSuperstore. Quote
Lee B Posted March 26, 2022 Report Posted March 26, 2022 Lower priced machines have drums which only last xx,xxx copies before they have to be replaced which can be expensive. One of my clients was sold a lower priced HP. The drum didn't even last 20,000 copies, then the drum replacement cost was about 60% of the original purchase price. Quote
Lion EA Posted March 26, 2022 Report Posted March 26, 2022 Staples is advertising printers, including all-in-ones, today: https://www.staples.com/Printers/cat_CL167883?cid=EM_OPT_P_954858POS-01_P1&utm_medium=Printers_XC&utm_term=19999PRINTERS&utm_source=A79BE28B895DAA540894D08E0B79BA8B_FRIDAY_P_DOTCOM_CONS_BUSN&utm_campaign=954858P7A&utm_content=POS-01_P1 Quote
joanmcq Posted March 26, 2022 Report Posted March 26, 2022 The drum for my brother was approximately $25? It was a few years ago and I don’t remember. Quote
Lee B Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I have had several Canon and a number of HP Laser printers since 1992 and I have never paid for a drum. 2 Quote
Catherine Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I have a Canon Imageclass duplex multifunction and it's great. Scans (okay, but it does), faxes, copies, prints. I almost always use it for printing, duplex. Fast, sharp, clear. Quote
Slippery Pencil Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I have a Canon Imageclass. Stopped working after a 1000 pages or so. Won't buy another Canon again. Quote

Abby Normal Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I bought a Canon scanner a long time ago and it didn't last very long. Never again. I never buy multi-function machines because the scanning is usually slower and poorer quality, but mainly because, if you buy a separate printer and scanner, and one fails, you don't have to replace both. 3 Quote
Lee B Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I have a small Fujitsu ScanSnap that has worked flawlessly for many years. 4 Quote
WITAXLADY Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I like my brother HL-L2395 but it does not like non brother ink! Fast The Brother HL-2280 takes generic but is slower.. Quote
Catherine Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 My Canon multi-function is basically a monochrome printer with a couple of bells and whistles that rarely see use. My scanner is an ancient Kodak i1120 duplex scanner that is fabulous. Main printer is an HP color laser. But sometimes I just want fast monochrome that I can grab from where I sit; that's the Canon. Plus it will fax and copy, and on rare occasion I'll use it to scan. 1 Quote
