JackieCPA Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 I know! It's early! But, since we have returns in I am getting them ready to go. I noticed that in the e-file error one of my clients, whom we have had for years. It says there name is too long to be e-filed and must be paper filed. Has anyone else run across this? I was going to put their return to the side for now and hope that by the time we can e-file returns it won't be an error anymore. Thoughts anyone? Quote
jklcpa Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 IRS uses the first 4 letters of the last name, so you can truncate it to allow the e-file to process. Just explain to your client the reason why. 5 Quote
Pacun Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 I usually take out the second or hyphenated last name... MAKE SURE you move your cursor away from that field and then try to create the efile file again. I keep cutting last name(S) until it works. 2 Quote
Medlin Software, Dennis Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 Snip from IRS Pub 4164. (The software could handle this, but the refund paper check issue might be a reason not to auto adjust.) This is just one example, but I have seen others where the name fields (combined) is limited to 35, and each part of the name is limited to 20. 4 Quote
