I believe those expenses, although very honorable work, are not deductible as charitable giving. If the plane tickets, lodging, etc., had been paid for by the church, and the monies were donated to the church in support of the trip, then yes.

Maybe I am on the wrong foot here? The IRS really tightened up on requirements for charitable contributions.

Contributions are never deductible when they are to or on behalf of a foreign organization. It is a weak argument to say the orphanage is sponsored by or affiliated with a U.S. church.
