Lloyd Hudson Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 (edited) Have a couple that after filing MFJ discovered other issues that necessitate filing separate. One is self employed and the other is an employee at another firm. I amend leaving primary on amended return. Do I then amend the original return with the spouse? Or just file an original return MFS. Summary 1 amended return or 2 amended returns? Edited March 31, 2020 by Lloyd Hudson spell Quote
Lion EA Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 One amended return to keep one taxpayer. One original return for the other spouse to file. (But I just got out of a 2-hour webinar on tax and Small Business Act changes and don't trust anything I thought I knew!) 2 Quote
Lloyd Hudson Posted March 31, 2020 Author Report Posted March 31, 2020 Thanks. That is what I did, while fielding calls about "stimulus" and other subjects. But when reviewing I developed my doubts. Thank again for affirmation. Quote
Lion EA Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 I'm doubting everything now! Too many tax and business law changes during tax season to keep everything in the right compartments in my brain. 3 Quote
Max W Posted April 1, 2020 Report Posted April 1, 2020 Normally that can only be done by filing the two MFS returns before April 15. Is this extended now to July 15? Most likely, but does anyone know for sure? Amend the Primary on the 1040 MFJ to MFS and create a MFS for the Secondary. 1 Quote
Lion EA Posted April 1, 2020 Report Posted April 1, 2020 Good point about the date, Max. Probably 15 July, because everything that starts with "1040" moves. But, I'd probably aim to get it in 15 April unless I found something official moving the deadline. Lloyd has time. I got a couple things off my desk that I couldn't verify postponed deadlines. 2 Quote
