Have your client research his cost basis in his shares. Purchase document. Broker. Investor Relations at the company. If you have time, help him remember date and look up on BigCharts.com. Use zero for basis.

Did they really buy it 60 years ago or did they inherit it?

Did they have a certificate? It would have had a date on it.

 

Multiple websites will give you a price as of a particular date.
