ETax847 Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 If the taxpayer's driver's license info required this year for federal filings? Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 Only certain state REQUIRE the drivers license information. We require it for ALL clients, as part of our documentation for security. Quote
ETax847 Posted January 21, 2020 Author Report Posted January 21, 2020 ATX does not seem to be rolling the info over. Any idea why or what I need to enable? Quote
Lion EA Posted January 22, 2020 Report Posted January 22, 2020 I think some states require that it be typed in each year. 1 Quote
Pacun Posted January 22, 2020 Report Posted January 22, 2020 It makes sense, since the requirement is for us to ask for identification each year. Quote

Yes, but is the taxpayer's driver's license info required this year for federal filing? I don't think it is a requirement in order to file the federal return. Correct? 1 Quote
Chamberlain Posted January 22, 2020 Report Posted January 22, 2020 It should roll over...just invites errors having to enter it each year, and seems silly to require ID every year. I get new ID when the old one expires. We should only have to reenter if expired. Quote

Correct, and it will stay that way at least until the IRS figures out how to handle those US citizens who live and work outside the States. For example, my clients in the Czech Republic. They don't have, and can't have, US state drivers' licenses. Passports? Yup - but that's not a choice/option. 2 Quote

Entering it every year, is SOOOO difficult, and is a method of verifying identity. Quote
Sara EA Posted January 23, 2020 Report Posted January 23, 2020 The data rolls over in UltraTax (at least it did in the past, haven't checked the 2019 version yet). There is a diagnostic if the license has expired. Speaking of which, some states have six and seven years between renewals. I assume aging is not allowed during that time. 1 Quote

Lion EA Posted January 23, 2020 Report Posted January 23, 2020 Thank goodness, I check each year, even when I have a copy or it's a state that rolled over. Discovered last summer that a client in Singapore had lost his license, so got a new one when in NY -- with a new number! 1 Quote

Other software including my provider's has rolled it forward in prior years, and mine is still doing so for the 2019 tax year. Mine also flags the fields to alert the preparer to check the information, and the flags must be cleared by the preparer before the e-file is created. 2 Quote
Catherine Posted January 23, 2020 Report Posted January 23, 2020 I e-filed one last year where the license was expired! Client (older person) had given up on driving and had nothing else. I figured I'd try it - it went through. Still the same person, just not valid for driving. Quote
Lloyd Hudson Posted January 30, 2020 Report Posted January 30, 2020 aand then you have Arizona, Get your Adult license and then it expires on your 65th birthday. Cuts down on DMV work 2 Quote

Here in MA, I *wish* they'd do something similar (maybe a new picture every ten years; that might make sense). We have far too many people out on the roads who are a danger to everyone around them. There's a reason for the term "Massholes" out there! 2 1 Quote
Lion EA Posted January 30, 2020 Report Posted January 30, 2020 Yeah, and those MA drivers don't stay in the lines/borders and drift down here into CT. 1 Quote
Medlin Software, Dennis Posted January 30, 2020 Report Posted January 30, 2020 My passengers always take on the comments about idiot drivers. While I see them, I usually am not affected by them. After roughly a million miles on motorcycles, I still drive like I am invisible to others, even when in our motorhome towing our Jeep. I was young, dumb, and invincible back in my MC days, and was almost always the rabbit (the fastest moving vehicle). Back to the OP, I just filed my personal, and tried not including DL info. I got a warning (from the software) that my state return (CA) may be delayed without DL info. No warning for the fed return. Quote
Lion EA Posted January 30, 2020 Report Posted January 30, 2020 Federal hasn't asked for it, yet. They use the ID PINs. But, more and more states are asking. NY has required it for some time now. CT is optional. 1 Quote
