Tech Question HD space used

Just bought a new external HD.  Copied files to external HD.  Original files show 84gb.  New external HD showing this is 363gb.  Whoa!  Anyone know what may be happening here?  Properties window shows 84gb size of file, 363gb size on disk.

The only thing that comes to mind is that your hard drive was compressed.

OR....You inadvertently transferred more files than what you meant to.  Check the contents of each.

Are you sure you're reading the screen right? The windows screen shows the FREE GB, not the used GB. You have to subtract from total drive size to see the used GB.

My windows screen shows both used and free space.  It's a 3t external HD.

None of my Win 8.1 or win 7 machines show that. Are you on 10? Below image shows 104 used of 237 total. I have to subtract to know the used amount.

I think we're looking at two different windows.  I'm on W10.  Explorer.  Right click on file c or e.  Menu pops up.  Last item on menu says 'Properties'.  Click on Properties.  Under General tab.
