Randall Posted March 29, 2019 Report Posted March 29, 2019 Just to confirm my thinking. Client's son was 24 before end of year. Still qualifies as qualifying relative. W2 earnings only $2k, lived at home all year. Has used AOC credit 3 years. He should still qualify for the AOC. Quote
Pacun Posted March 30, 2019 Report Posted March 30, 2019 Forget about age, look at income. YES to all your doubts. (Dependent, AOC on parents' return). 2 Quote
Lion EA Posted March 30, 2019 Report Posted March 30, 2019 Is he still and undergrad at 24? Or, a graduate student? Quote

Jack from Ohio Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Age 24, only the student can claim education credits. And then, it is only the non-refundable portion. Other dependent, is the only option for the parents. No education credit for the parents. Quote

But looking at it, there was nothing about the age 24. From Pub 970, he is a dependent of the parents (other relative), he is a qualified and eligible student. 1 Quote
Pacun Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 A high school drop out can be 40 years old, quit his job, move with his parents, pass the GED, start his bachelors degree and parents can get AOC. 2 Quote
Lion EA Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 But, please don't tell that to my grown kids! 2 Quote
Lion EA Posted April 1, 2019 Report Posted April 1, 2019 No, but I don't need them quitting their jobs and moving back in with me! 3 Quote
