2 w-2's from same company?

Hello All!

I'm back! I changed my name from mydalbasti because I couldn't figure out my password and email I used. Anyway, has anybody heard of a company( using the same EIN #) issuing 2 W-2's to one person?

Yes, I have seen where a company changes payroll company during the year, and employees get two W-2's, I would ask the employee to double check his wages are correct, sometimes is lack of communication.

If same FEIN, watch for / handle over withholding of SS.

Could be (off the top of my head):

Different SEIN.  Employee is subject to more than one state tax jurisdiction, or I suppose, structure change only requiring new SEIN.

Multiple local taxes, too many to fit on one W2 (think Ohio).  Should only have one Federal and State information.

Same "company", different SEIN (multi state liability).

Third Party Sick Pay

Change in payroll processor (a paid processor is not going to want to prepare any report with pay information they did not control)

Change in payroll software, failing to merge the data.

One other possibility, creation of W -2s is a favorite tool of scammers.

True!  The odds of a scammer going to a preparer who finds this group must be small, but still possible.

Yeah no she called the company and they said they have been doing this for years. She was paid monies to retire early. So they paid her with 2 W-2's.

REALLY double-check the totals.  We had one case of a company changing payroll service providers; old one issued W2 for half year, new one issued W2 for full year.  Major, major problems for MANY people.
