ETax847 Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 Client is a US citizen but his wife is a Canadian citizen. Can he still file MFJ, if his wife does not have a social security number yet? If so, how is this done in the software? Thanks! Quote
ETax847 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Report Posted January 14, 2019 I did some research online but read conflicting things. Ugh Quote
ILLMAS Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 TP can apply for an ITIN for the wife in the mean time, see form W-7/instruction for more information. 1 Quote
Max W Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 You will have to mail a paper return to the Austin, TX address in the W-7 instructions. In her SS box of the 1040, enter APPLIED FOR. All the required documents are sent along with the return. Figure on 6 months for processing. 1 Quote
ETax847 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Report Posted January 14, 2019 Holy moly! Thanks for all the info! I appreciate all of the guidance. Quote
Catherine Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 Shall we assume the wife did NOT live in Canada the full year? If so, she can also be excluded from the return - but then your client won't get MFJ benefits. I have a couple in the Czech Republic; she is a dual citizen, he's never been here. We file her single and exclude her Czech income (raised here, went back home years ago, only needs to file because of the dual citizenship thing - FBAR too). Quote
