WITAXLADY Posted March 25, 2018 Report Posted March 25, 2018 so I went on forum and got so enthralled - forgot to post my original question!! It is stupid but I have never seen so am double checking and trying to get out of reporting it! clients wife died in 2016 and in 2017 he received $800 in his name O/A/O and her name underneath dec'd - doe he have to report that? thx Quote
Gail in Virginia Posted March 25, 2018 Report Posted March 25, 2018 It sounds like it was paid to him from her account, so yes. Quote
WITAXLADY Posted March 25, 2018 Author Report Posted March 25, 2018 I figured so... why - it is still $$ but I have not seen that? usually they ask for $$ back? Thx d Quote
Catherine Posted March 25, 2018 Report Posted March 25, 2018 What does the "O/a/o" stand for? We saw one of these just last week and neither of us could figure it out. Quote
jasdlm Posted March 26, 2018 Report Posted March 26, 2018 Means 'On Account of'. They owed wife money for something, and they can't pay her back because she is deceased, so paying the widower. Agree with Gail. 1 Quote
WITAXLADY Posted March 26, 2018 Author Report Posted March 26, 2018 so if received year she passed - would not be taxable as mfj - now is!! as mfs Quote
Gail in Virginia Posted March 26, 2018 Report Posted March 26, 2018 Why would he be MFS? He was single when he received the payment in 2017 (unless he was a qualifying widow/widower) and MFJ in 2016 - at no point was he MFS. Unless the executor of the estate decided not to file the final return for the wife as MFJ. Quote
WITAXLADY Posted April 3, 2018 Author Report Posted April 3, 2018 ok, single - so much work and so little time Quote
