Christian Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 A formerly unmarried client tied the knot last year. He normally efiles so I created the efile and it has now been rejected as there is the name mismatch between the beloved's current and former name. Is there any number I can call as a practitioner whereby they can effect a manual adjustment of her name. I have printed a mail copy but perhaps there is something I can effect by making a phone call. Quote
NECPA in NEBRASKA Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 Did you see her SS card? She may not have changed her name. 1 Quote
Gail in Virginia Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 And even if she has, it sometimes takes IRS a little while to be notified. 2 Quote
Christian Posted April 12, 2017 Author Report Posted April 12, 2017 I did not address that. I should have known since I have known married women who went years and did not change their registration. Quote
Lion EA Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 Try her "other" last name and e-file. If that works, you don't have to call them. 2 Quote
Jack from Ohio Posted April 13, 2017 Report Posted April 13, 2017 The name and SS# must match exactly what is on the SS card. If she has an updated card, the IRS has been informed. Quote

If she has an updated card, the IRS has been informed. Not always. My client changed her name July 2016 at the SS office, got the new card. Didn't tell me and I filed the old name. It went through without a hitch. I only realized the new name when I was depositing her check and I called her to ask why her checks had her maiden name yet she never mentioned she had changed it. ... she forgot about it. Quote
Christian Posted April 13, 2017 Author Report Posted April 13, 2017 I have a female client who updated her Social Security card some years back and her efiles only go through under the old registration. Clearly the system needs some tuning. 4 Quote
