ETax847 Posted April 3, 2017 Report Posted April 3, 2017 Taxpayer had multiple employers in 2016. Is it true as of 2016, if one employer withheld too much Soc Sec tax, he cannot claim the excess credit on his tax return as in years past? I'm not sure if the is a new rule change. Please help Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted April 3, 2017 Report Posted April 3, 2017 Line 71 has excess SS tax withheld and one of my clients, with 4 IT jobs, had significant excess refunded, no problems. Quote
ETax847 Posted April 3, 2017 Author Report Posted April 3, 2017 Any idea why I would get the error message "you must ask your employer to refund the excess to you. You cannot claim it on your return." Seen in the summary totals worksheet below line 17. Quote

You get this message when it's the same employer, are all the W-2's from different (different FEIN) employers? 1 Quote
ETax847 Posted April 3, 2017 Author Report Posted April 3, 2017 ILLMAS, you're a life saver! I had no idea that field somehow got prepopulated! Error fixed. Thanks so much!!! Quote
Lion EA Posted April 3, 2017 Report Posted April 3, 2017 I agree. If one employer creates an excess, employee must get that employer to refund his excess from within the company. If multiple employers create the excess, your client gets credit for excess taxes paid on his federal tax return. 1 Quote
