rpilote Posted March 30, 2017 Report Posted March 30, 2017 Hello, I am new to this forum and new to administering the affairs of an estate. My wife's aunt passed away in 2016. My wife is executor but is having me handle the finances. There was virtually no money but the was lots of credit card debt which I negotiated down. The only asset was a house that sold 3/2017 for $125000. I filed her 1040 for 2016. The sale of the house will be divided 3 ways between her 2 brothers and herself. The attorney who did the closing held $15000 in escrow for the NJ inheritance tax. I have an ein for her. Do I need to file a 1041? She lived in that house for about 15 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich Quote
Catherine Posted March 30, 2017 Report Posted March 30, 2017 This forum is for professionals, not "civilians," and your question goes much deeper than "do I need to file this form." Please find a really good EA or CPA to help you - they will be worth their fee significantly more than any attorney (with no disrespect to attorneys - but we tax pro's are better at helping, hand-holding, fixing messes, and we charge far less, to boot). 7 Quote
