Possi Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 I have had 2 dead spouses this year that did not get SSI statements. What is up with that? Shouldn't the surviving spouses have gotten a statement for the SS dead spouses got before they went to Heaven? This is a first for me, and it's happened twice in as many weeks. Sorry to start the morning off with this... but I was dying to ask. 4 Quote
gfizer Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 They should have received a 1099-SSA for the portion of the year the deceased spouse was living and drawing benefits. I've had several brought in to me this year for clients who have died. Are you perhaps dealing with a situation where the address changed after the death of the one spouse and SSA wasn't notified? 2 Quote
RitaB Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Agree. My dead people get them. I was dying to say that, too. 4 Quote
Possi Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 Well, that's what I thought, that's how it's always been, but not this year. The first one I had, I just punched the number in and overstated it so he doesn't get a love letter. This second one, I will have to do the same thing. I'd rather overstate the income since both surviving spouses can't deal with tracking it down. Thanks Quote
SaraEA Posted March 29, 2017 Report Posted March 29, 2017 Did these people die in January, after they received their monthly payment? If so, it should have been paid back so their net would be zero. Social Security is paid forward but Medicare is paid backward, or the other way around, never could get that straight. Quote

Neither one died in January. It's so strange that neither spouse got SS statements for them. Both spouses do keep up with tax papers, too. Quote
