Terry D EA Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Yesterday, and right in the client's face, the computer I was using tossed up a warning the hard disk was about fail. What better time for this to happen just two days before the filing season starts. Anyway, took the computer to the computer repair store to have a new drive installed and cloned from the one that is about to fail. I found and modified a Computer Repair Nondisclosure Agreement that I gave to the computer store. At first they were a little apprehensive, but I told them they had to sign it or I would be forced to go elsewhere. Whoever did this originally must have had it put together buy a lawyer. If folks here would like to have a copy, I'll make one. I have attached the one I used yesterday. Nothing private on it at all. Computer Repair Nondisclosure Agreement.docx Quote
Terry D EA Posted January 22, 2017 Author Report Posted January 22, 2017 The attached copy had a couple of typos in it that I have corrected. I will remove all information regarding this repair so it will be a blank document and have attached it to this reply. Blank Computer Repair Nondisclosure Agreement.docx 5 Quote
Randall Posted January 23, 2017 Report Posted January 23, 2017 Quote What kind of a warning did you receive? I didn't know you got a warning. I thought they just failed? How old was your computer? I used to buy a new system every 5 years. I changed that to 4 years with my latest compute. I'm thinking of buying a new system later this year with this one only being 3 years old. I buy two new external HDs every two years just in case they go bad. I guess I'm just getting paranoid. I'm only a one person office so I don't have to buy multiple equipment, just for myself. 1 Quote
Terry D EA Posted January 23, 2017 Author Report Posted January 23, 2017 The OP is Win 7 and the error is called a smart error. It literally was a window that gave a warning that windows had detected a hard disk failure and to immediately backup the machine. My understanding is this is something that windows has to give you the opportunity to back the machine up before it crashes. This computer was purchased in 2009 so is safe to say it was not a major surprise. Just wish it hadn't happened in front of a client. 11 minutes ago, Randall said: You said you purchased computers every five years. Probably a good idea. But....I purchased a new desk top machine this year and it came with a very noisy hard drive that had to be immediately replaced. So, backup, backup, backup is all I can say. Quote
Gail in Virginia Posted January 23, 2017 Report Posted January 23, 2017 Thanks for sharing, Terry. I have been using the same confidentiality agreement I have employees sign, but this is better. Quote
