CANADA GST/HST QUESTION

I have a client who manufactures citrus based deodorizers, cleaning products etc.

They have previously sold their products to Canadian subsidiaries of U S Retailers and other Canadian retailers.

Now they have an opportunity to sell through Amazon Canada.

Amazon Canada insists on having a Canadian GST/HST number from my client

and sent them a RC1 to fill out, which is a 6 page form to request an ID number.

Previously, none of the Canadian Retailers that they have dealt with have asked for a GST/HST number.

I would appreciate it, if anyone can shed light on this situation?
