BulldogTom Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 I should know this, but I am having a brain cramp. Situation: Husband dies unexpectedly. 9 year old son qualifies for SS survivor benefits from his father. Is the child providing his own support from that money or is it considered provided by someone else? Thanks for the basic refresher. Tom Newark, CA Quote
Max W Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 See the footnote at teh bottom of page two. https://apps.irs.gov/app/vita/content/globalmedia/tables_1_2_4012.pdf 1 Quote
jklcpa Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 For those that don't click on the links, that footnote reads as follows (bold is mine): 3 A worksheet for determining support is included later in this section. If a child receives social security benefits and uses them toward his or her own support, those benefits are considered as provided by the child. Benefits provided by the state to a needy person (welfare, food stamps, housing, SSI) are generally considered support provided by the state. 2 Quote
