I received a rejection error code IND-510, spouse ssn cannot be same as ssn used as primary on another return.  Does this mean possible fraud use of the ssn?  I remember the topic was discussed previously but I can't remember the procedures.  Do I need to paper file the return?  Is there a special reporting form also regarding this?  Also, is there a publication of all the rejection error codes?  I know there used to be in the past but I can't find it.

They used to publish a list of the reject codes, apparently they decided that was no longer necessary.  

It appears the spouse either already filed separately or someone else filed with their SSN.  Although option 2, [fraud] is certainly a possibility, option one should always be checked first, because it happens a lot more than you might expect.

In most cases, I have found this to be a case of identity theft.  The form is 14039 and the identity theft number is 800-908-4490 Extension 245

Thanks.  Spouse was deceased in mid 2014.  Filing as surviving spouse.  I moved the deceased spouse (husband) to the spouse line and used surviving wife as taxpayer.  Efiled the extension in the spring and no problem with the efiling.

Could be SS has a hold on that # since deceased. I remember early on I had one that the # was frozen. Ended up paper filing with a 1310 and a copy of the death cert. attached.Refund eventually showed up.

I wouldn't do that.  They are still MFJ for 2014 and I would leave him (the deceased spouse) as the primary.  I would try it one more time with the spouses switched back around.  The software will take care of the deceased part if you entered the DOD in the information.

mcb39, I've done that in the past with no problem on the efiling.  Do you really think that would be the cause of the efiling rejection?

I have not seen e-file rejection for just switching the order. 

However I have seen time and time again that estimated tax payments do NOT get applied to the surviving spouse's account if that person has been the second name.  Now I warn folks about this, because the last thing an elderly widow/widower needs is a nastygram from the IRS saying they owe $16,000 that they do not, in fact, owe.

mcb39, I've done that in the past with no problem on the efiling.  Do you really think that would be the cause of the efiling rejection?

It was just a thought (hope).  I am leaning toward the identity theft.  That has always been the case when I get that rejection.
