mrichman333 Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 I have a T/P that got a letter from NJ regarding their NJ EIC. The letter ask them to send copies of birth certificates, SS cards W-2 Stubs, and some other things. Sound VERY strange to me. I gave her the main number to NJ division of taxation but she has not been able to get through, the recording say because of high volume to please call back. Quote
MsTabbyKats Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 One of mine got the same thing........... NJ can be a pain Quote
Catherine Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 I have no idea if this is some new scam -- but at least you could check the address to send to and see if it is a known NJ taxation dept address. If it is, it's far more likely to be legit. But I would recommend to any of my clients to hold off sending unless/until they can confirm with the state. My two cents' worth, ymmv. 2 Quote
Margaret CPA in OH Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 Ohio has been cracking down on identity theft and has been sending out letters for some taxpayers to prove their identity. If they fail a telephone or online 4 questions quiz (and it seems some questions are bizarre), they then are required to submit various documents to prove identity and receive their refunds. The documents are only if they fail the tests. I've had just 2 clients, one was my son, to get this notice. Perhaps NJ is doing something similar. Quote
Lee B Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 According articles in the news, this is the state of Ohio's response to paying out over $ 250 million in bogus refunds last year. Quote
Lion EA Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 CT added EIC only a few years ago and has been sending letters to huge numbers of people requesting more information before they will release refunds. Just a couple of NJ returns and not in EIC range, so am not familiar with what NJ's doing this year. Quote
mrichman333 Posted April 17, 2015 Author Report Posted April 17, 2015 I tried to find the PO Box # on the NJ website but couldn't Quote
SaraEA Posted April 18, 2015 Report Posted April 18, 2015 Surely the NJ tax dept has satellite offices around the state. Tell the client to bring the documents to an office. That way they know they are giving up their information to the real thing. 2 Quote
DevM Posted April 18, 2015 Report Posted April 18, 2015 I have had a couple of clients that had to send that in2012 and 2013. called Priority line and sent all the items. the refund was cleared after 4-6 weeks. Quote
