David Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 New client is a landman. His 2013 tax return showed state tax returns for every state he worked in and he paid state income taxes to those states. He says that in talking with other landmen, he learned that he only has to pay state taxes in the state he resides.I haven't been able to find anything that indicates landmen are treated differently and only need to pay state taxes to the state of residence. Can those of you who have landman clients let me know if this is correct and give me a cite or other authority? Thanks. David Posted March 26, 2015 Author Report Posted March 26, 2015 Evidently they work as independent contractors in the oil and gas industry getting contracts and lease deals. Quote
kcjenkins Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 Sorry, but just because others do it wrong does not create an exception. Each state has it's own rules for how much you can earn before you have to file, but if you earn enough in any state that has an income tax, you have to file if you want to stay legal. 2 Quote
