mrichman333 Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 Back in 2011 I had a customer with 1099-R income, the state payer was designated as NY and had a state distribution amount. He lives in NJ but has his 1099-R mailed to his NY address. (that's another post) I was using TRX back in 2011 and the software did not carry the pension to his NJ resident return and I didn't catch it. Well he just received a notice from NJ mentioning the missing pension income. So if copy A goes to the IRS, Copy 1 the state (NY), copy B goes with the return. So I'm just curious how it ever came to NJ's attention. Quote

kcjenkins Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 IRS reports to states based on where their return address is. NY got it from the 1099, NJ got it from the 1040. Quote
