Kea Posted April 10, 2014 Report Posted April 10, 2014 Client set up installment request on return that is now accepted. Something just came up with one of his kids and now can't make the $5K payment he said he would by the 15th. What can be done now? I know if he had just waited for IRS to contact him, there would be no issue. But if he has already requested an installment plan and can't make the first payment, what happens? Thanks Quote
Elrod Posted April 10, 2014 Report Posted April 10, 2014 Send him to local IRS office to plead his case, sometimes local folks can be human and grant him a stay. Quote
JMovichEA Posted April 10, 2014 Report Posted April 10, 2014 I had a client in a similar situation about 2 years ago. He had just arranged a payment plan with IRS when he lost his job. He called IRS and they were able to work out a new plan. Quote
Kea Posted April 10, 2014 Author Report Posted April 10, 2014 Thanks. We do have a local office. But it is (of course) swamped this time of year. Should he wait until 4/16 to go talk to them? Quote
jklcpa Posted April 10, 2014 Report Posted April 10, 2014 Agree with Elrod. If client misses the deadline for a payment, he's in default and the entire balance becomes payable. 1 Quote
JohnH Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 He will probably do just fine if he calls IRS. If he doesn't get a sympathetic person on the first call, just call back with new or additional information he forgot to tell the first person he spoke with. The telephone collections people have lots of leeway. Quote
