Pacun Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 Nothing gets by you. Actually, 1c kills her. She cannot get the refundable credit. I have gotten the refundable credit for 20 year olds but they were full time students at least one semester. Quote
Pacun Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 Good job confusing me. YES, she qualifies because 1c reads AND you didn't provide half of your support. In this case, she did and therefore she qualifies for the refundable portion of it. 1 Quote
RitaB Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 Good job confusing me. I do what I can. You thought I was using reverse psychology, didn't you? Ain't nobody got time for that. Quote
jasdlm Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 Refundable Part of Credit Forty percent of the American opportunity credit is refundable for most taxpayers. However, if you were under age 24 at the end of 2013 and the conditions listed below apply to you, you cannot claim any part of the American opportunity credit as a refundable credit on your tax return. Instead, your allowed credit (figured on Form 8863, Part II) will be used to reduce your tax as a nonrefundable credit only. You do not qualify for a refund if items 1 (a, b, or c), 2, and 3 below apply to you. You were: Under age 18 at the end of 2013, or Age 18 at the end of 2013 and your earned income (defined below) was less than one-half of your support (defined below),or Over age 18 and under age 24 at the end of 2013 and a full-time student (defined below) and your earned income (defined below) was less than one-half of your support (defined below). At least one of your parents was alive at the end of 2013. You are filing a return as single, head of household, qualifying widow(er), or married filing separately for 2013. Agree with Carol. Quote
jasdlm Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 Sorry . . . I guess I was posting while Carol was posting. Did not mean to duplicate the publication cite. Quote
Pacun Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 So what's the verdit? I think she qualifies for refundable AOC. 3 Quote
jklcpa Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 According to Deb, the client is age 21, less than a full-time student, and provides more than 1/2 of her support. For those saying she doesn't qualify, which part of question one do you think is precluding her from qualifying? 1 Quote
Carolbeck Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 Sorry . . . I guess I was posting while Carol was posting. Did not mean to duplicate the publication cite. Your layout looks better. Copy and paste sometimes only works so well. Quote
RitaB Posted March 26, 2014 Report Posted March 26, 2014 And you know Deb is going: "The return has been filed and accepted. Why are you people still talking?" And I ran out of "likes" again, Pacun, or I would like your short and sweet "she qualifies". This is no way to live. 4 Quote
Lion EA Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 Follow the money. If the support worksheets filled out by parents and by child show that child pays for more than half her own support.... 1 Quote
joanmcq Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 BTW, community college in CA is still really really cheap. I'm going to bet most of that $1400 is for books. Also, there are still places to live in CA that are pretty damn cheap. Just sayin' 1 Quote
